What is F1?

The fastest team sport on Earth

Formula 1 hosts championship races around the globe in a series of Grands Prix. It features the most advanced engineered cars in the world and is the highest level of single-seater racing. Drivers and brands get the recognition, but it's deeply collaborative — even the slightest pit crew mishap can end in a wreck.

Multi-layered hybrid structure

01

FIA

Governance and ownership — rules, safety, regulation, fairness.

02

Formula One Group

Commercial management (Liberty Media) — promotion, sponsorship, media rights.

03

10 Teams

Independent corporate entities with hierarchical, matrix and functional elements.

Analysis · Power

Who controls the grid

Power is the ability to control resources: material resources, expertise and experience, relationships and network position, and personal influence.

How the entry unfolded

  1. 2023

Andretti applies to become F1's 11th team, backed by GM/Cadillac. The FIA approves after review.

  2. 2024

Formula 1 rejects it, arguing Andretti hadn't shown enough added value. The decision draws U.S. antitrust scrutiny.

  3. 2024–25

The proposal changes: GM/Cadillac takes a stronger role and commits to building its own F1 engine.

  4. 2025

F1 and the FIA approve Cadillac as the 11th team for the 2026 season.

Strength

  • Protects value for existing teams
  • New entrants must demonstrate added value
  • Preserves competitiveness and commercial stability

Risk

  • F1 can deny entry even after FIA approval
  • Power can appear exclusionary
  • Andretti rejection led to antitrust scrutiny

Analysis · Driver Incentives

Points vs. the team

25/18/15

Points for 1st / 2nd / 3rd

Clear rewards push drivers harder — moving from 2nd to 1st adds 7 points.

43

McLaren points · Hungary 2024

Pit strategy put Norris ahead of Piastri. He gave up the win and 7 personal points — the team scored 43 either way. Helping a teammate can cost a driver.

Recommendations

The plan

01 · Power

Open the gate

Keep the power, lose the gatekeeper image. Vision 2030: any team that clears a published bar races within a year.

$450M

Cadillac's entry fee, paid to the 10 existing teams

  • → Publish the entry scorecard · F1 + FIA · 0–6 mo
  • → Decide in 120 days, in writing · F1 Group · 6–12 mo
  • → Publish the fee formula · F1 + Teams · by 2027

02 · Incentives

One team, one score

Reward drivers for what the team needs. Helping a teammate should never cost a driver money or standing.

−7

Points Norris lost for teamwork

“I know what Oscar’s done for me” – Norris on his ‘tough’ moment letting Piastri past in Hungary
  • → Pay bonuses on the team finish · next driver contracts
  • → Set swap rules before lights out · 0–6 mo
  • → Keep the 25/18/15 table — rivalry is what fans buy
